When I hike through the forests around here, I am continually amazed at the beauty of the trees. I love the colors and the evidence of the strength of the trees. But autumn always comes, and the leaves will eventually wither and fall from the trees, leaving the trees barren and rather weak looking.
Psalm 1 gives a picture of a different tree. This tree never loses its leaves and always bears fruit. The tree represents the person who walks in trust in the Lord. God’s Word fills his soul so much that he delights in it and is constantly meditating upon it. Psalm 1:2-3 says, “but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”
Just like this tree, we need water to remain vibrant and fruitful. God’s Word is living water for us. It constantly nourishes and strengthens us. Meditating upon God’s Word will cause us to be fruitful and prosper.
