I have pursued many honors over the years, but achieved very few. I have never been awarded a Most Valuable Person reward. I never received praise from the top executives of companies where I worked. I have never been recognized on the news for some great achievement. Most of us have not been honored in these ways. Even if we have, the honor only provided fleeting gratification, so we moved on to the next pursuit of recognition.
James 1:9-10 says, “Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away.” We are therefore warned regarding boasting about worldly honors. These honors come and go with little long-term impact. However, receiving the honor of being called a child of God provides rewards throughout eternity. The humble child of God will receive glory, brought into God’s presence forever. The proud person will be humbled before God’s judgment. Offer yourself to the loving God and trust Him to make you His child.
