I was thinking about who the poor people are that Jesus commands that we serve. Is it just people living in certain circumstances or only those people who have less than a certain income. I don’t think that Jesus defines being poor by the arbitrary standards set by governments or service organizations. I think we are to serve anyone who has a need and anyone that doesn’t have what we have. That significantly raises the bar for whom we should serve. You see, God does the same for us. God bestows His blessings upon us out of His grace and mercy, because we are in need of what He has.
Psalm 41:1-3 says, “Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the LORD delivers him; the LORD protects him and keeps him alive; he is called blessed in the land; you do not give him up to the will of his enemies. The LORD sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health.” The Lord has a special love and compassion for the poor. He promises to deliver from trouble, protect, bless, sustain, and heal the person who serves the poor. He blesses all of us who are poor in His eyes and gives us what we need.
