Thoughts on life and faith after unexpected life changes at an advanced age

Most everybody has some kind of morning routine to get us ready for the day ahead. It usually involved hygiene, food, reading, and getting everyone else ready. If our routine gets disrupted or if something goes wrong in the routine, we may be in a bad mood for the rest of the day.
Psalm 92:1-4 says, “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy.” Scripture often declares how good it is to give God the praise and thanksgiving due to Him. Remembering His steadfast love in the morning prepares us to trust Him throughout the day. Focusing on God’s love early in our day, gives us assurance and helps set our attitudes in the right direction. When we speak of His faithfulness at night, we are declaring that God did many awesome works on our behalf during the day. As the psalmist wrote, thinking of God’s faitfulness displayed to us throughout the day makes our hearts glad.

I am not much of a clothes fashionista. At my age, I really don’t care as much about how the clothes look as much as whether they are comfortable. Some people spend their lives and careers concerned about clothing and styles. Unfortunately, they may look good on the inside but are not so attractive in their inner lives.
Ephesians 4:22-24 says, “to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.” When we trust God, He makes us brand new creations. His Spirit in us renews our minds, away from former deceitful thoughts and desires, and toward righteousness and holiness. As His children we begin to become more like our Heavenly Father.

Words have the power to impact our emotions and affect our lives. A word spoken in anger often inflames anger in another person’s soul. An encouraging word spoken at the proper time and in the right way has the power to bring joy. Wise counsel can bring peace to the hearer.
Psalm 85:8-9 says, “Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly. Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.” Listening to and understanding what God has to say to us brings peace to our hearts and souls. Proclaiming His Word to others brings glory to those we serve.

Have you ever been trying to do a good thing, but you faced some obstacles. Then someone else is also trying to do a good thing, and their efforts facilitate the good work you are trying to do. God is the master of bringing good things together to do awesome works. He is able to combine His love with His righteousness to lead us in the way of peace and faithfulness.
Psalm 85:10-12 says, “Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Yes, the Lord will give what is good.” God offers steadfast love and is faithful to every promise He has made. We should respond with faithfulness. God grants us righteousness which gives us peace as we walk in His ways. These good gifts all come together as we trust God and abide in Him.

I am a father and grandfather. As such, I would never withhold any good gift that I had within my resources and power to give to both my children and grandchildren. Love does that to a person. We want to give everything we can to those whom we love.
Psalm 84:11-12 says, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you.” God will give us every good thing if we will follow Jesus and walk in His ways. His love is greater than any love we can imagine. Out of His steadfast and eternal love for His children, He will give us every good gift, as this is within His power to do. He promises to be the Light to lead us and the shield to protect us.
